Sub Topics
Topic 13.1: Introduction

Topic structure and overview.

Topic 13.2: Introduction to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Safety

In this topic of the module you will be provided with a brief history of the colonisation of Australia and a discussion of the lasting impact it has had for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be introduced to the concept of cultural safety and begin to build the knowledge and skills required to effectively implement commitments to cultural safety at both a personal and organisational level.

Topic 13.3: Modelling Cultural Safety in Your Own Work

This topic of the module focuses on how workers can model cultural safety in their own practice. This builds upon the foundation of self-awareness of own and others’ culture, as well as ability to constantly reflect on own cultural bias. Moreover, you will learn a range of communication skills and practices that will help foster respectful and safe relationships with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients or colleagues.

Topic 13.4: Develop and Evaluate Cultural Safety Strategies

In this topic of the module you will learn about promoting cultural safety on an organisational level, and participating in processes set out to develop and evaluate cultural safety strategies. An important element of promoting cultural safety is developing genuine partnerships with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities and/or organisations. It is important that they are engaged from planning, implementing to evaluating stages. Finally, cultural safety is a continuous learning journey for practitioners as well as organisations.

Topic 13.5 - 13.9: Readings

Throughout the topics above you will be referred to the readings captured in the remaining topics in this module. These consist of a collection of extracts from various books, articles and other publications.

All case histories in these texts are presented as examples only and any comparison which might be made with persons either living or dead is purely coincidental.

These readings include:

  • Topic 13.5: Creating change through partnership
  • Topic 13.6: Participatory evaluation
  • Topic 13.7: Welcome to country and acknowledgement of country
  • Topic 13.8: White priviledge: Unpacking the invisible knapsack
  • Topic 13.9: Why cultural safety rather than cultural competency

These readings have been replicated exactly from their original source, meaning that any errors in the original document will be transferred into this Book of Readings. In addition, if a Reading originates from an American source, it will maintain its American spelling and terminology.

Some of the readings in this module have been extracted from 'Book of Readings 5' Second Edition, February 2022.
