Welcome to the Apply building codes and standards to the construction process for class 1 and 10 buildings module.

The 'construction process' (sometimes referred to as the 'construction phase') is the physical construction, landscaping, or renovation phases, plus all related operations, such as demolition, site clearing, administration, etc. This is not to be confused with construction techniques used to accomplish a construction method or goal effectively. An example of a construction technique is masonry.

This module will cover the necessary information to understand and gain the knowledge to access, interpret, and apply relevant building codes and standards to the construction process applicable to National Construction Code (NCC) Class 1 and 10 building projects. In this module, you will learn how to classify buildings, determine construction compliance requirements from NCC, and apply fire protection requirements to Class 1 and 10 building projects.

As you progress through the learning, you will learn how to:

  • Classify building
  • Determine construction compliance requirements
  • Determine fire protection requirements.

Classes of building projects

For buildings, there are multiple classes of construction. The building classification is relevant to the intended use, without this we would have to construct a Class 1 (House) the same way as we construct a Class 5 (Office).

The classes relevant to this unit are only Classes 1 and 10.
