Welcome to Module 13
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to provide person-centered care and support to people living with dementia. It involves following an established individualised plan. This unit applies to workers in a residential or community context, including family homes. Work performed requires some discretion and judgement and may be carried out under direct or indirect supervision.
The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.
The key outcomes you will achieve upon completion of this module include:
- Current research on dementia and the different types of dementia.
- Understanding of dementia as a progressive neurological condition, including pathological features, common indicators and symptoms of dementia and potential impact on the person with dementia, their family and significant others.
- principles of person-centered approach to support the persons and using person centered approach with persons.
- Interpret individualised plan and familiarise self with the specific needs and wants of the person living with dementia.
- Organise activities which aim to maintain independence, using familiar routines and existing skills.
- Take action to minimise the likelihood of and reduce the impact of behaviors on the person and others.
- Role of assistive technologies in supporting people with Dementia.
- Legal and Ethical considerations in supporting the needs and protecting the rights of people with dementia.
To achieve competency for the unit within this module, you must complete all theory assessments at the end of this module (short answer questions) as well as the structured workplace learning and assessment (including Portfolio, logbook and any other workplace related documentation located in Module 16.
