A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way

- John C. Maxwell

Always seeking to learn more is a quality of leadership that is often not championed. Reflecting on what went well, what did not go well and why are key characteristics of effective leaders.

Sub Topics

A long time ago our ancestors faced danger constantly as they were not the dominant Apex species in the food chain that we are today. People perished every day, from causes such as food poisoning to being hunted by predators. Life was tough and humans needed effective leadership to surpass all these challenges and work as a team for survival.

At first, leaders were not appointed but were the consequence of a dire situation. We needed people that stepped into a problem with a solution, people whose problem solving and management skills were ahead of the curve and whose resolutions were accepted by most if not all.

Later on, the leader will become not only the head of the pack but also their aspiration and their example.

Of the many skills you learn throughout your professional career, leadership is one of the most important. Without a leader, how do you find motivation? Without a leader, who do you turn to for support? Without a leader, how does a team thrive? Who will lead the team to the tournaments?

No matter the situation, someone has to do it. Leadership is one of the most important keys to success and in some cases victory.

But a team is only as good as their leader. In this module you will learn:

  • The basics of leadership
  • The skills required to become an effective leader
  • The importance of leadership in eSports
  • The skills required to ensure your leadership qualities grow

When you complete Module 4 Leadership for eSports you will be able to:

  1. Adapt learning plans to ensure own personal learning needs are met
    • What this means for you: It is essential to understand and identify your own learning styles and needs when developing skills as a leader. No two teaching styles are the same; no two learning styles are the same. Once you know what you need, you can adjust the plan moving forward to suit not only your needs but, potentially, the needs of others.
  2. Research the nature of leadership in eSports to inform professional development
    • What this means for you: You learn the do’s and don’ts of leadership, the background and fundamental traits that make for a good leader to ensure your team thrives.
  3. Identify which personal attributes need to be improved to be successful in eSports leadership roles
    • What this means for you: Identifying your strengths and weaknesses is vital when it comes to leadership. Once you have tapped into the areas of improvement required, your role as a leader in the eSports industry will continue to grow.
  4. Reflect on own leadership attributes and the personal growth needed for leadership roles in eSports
    • What this means for you: Self-reflection plays a key role in the success of any leader. It is essential you reflect on your skills and keep track of your personal goals for growth to ensure you are maximising your full potential as an eSports leader.

By now, you should know all the basic skills when it comes to producing an event. But theory is one thing, and practice is a whole different one.

Leaders show others how things are done. Giving them opportunities to either discover new abilities/skills or polish the ones they had.

With this module, you will understand that the secret behind leaders is that they act, they do, and by doing this, they learn more than just information.
