Our Code | Our Standards — Code of Professional Responsibility and Standards for the Teaching ProfessionAs teachers, we respect our trusted position in society and recognise the influence we have on learners, their understanding of the world and the future wellbeing of our society.
Our professional responsibility
As an early childhood educator, you have a number of responsibilities to show your commitment, understanding, and dedication to your role within Early Childhood Education. These can be broken down into four sections:
- Commitment to the teaching profession – how you will help to maintain public trust and confidence in the teaching profession.
- Commitment to learners – how you will work in the best interests of your learners.
- Commitment to families and whānau – how you will support and respect the role of your learners’ families and whānau
- Commitment to society – how you will respect your role in society and the influence you have on shaping the future of our tamariki.
Now look at each category individually and how you personally will demonstrate your commitment to following this code.
Activity - Learning and implementing The Code of Professional Responsibility
- Download and familiarise yourself with The Code of Professional Responsibility from the NZ Teaching Council.
- Download and read The Code of Professional Responsibility Examples in Practice
- Write down each of the four categories shown above and use your own words to describe the key points of each. This is for your resources in preparation for the assessments.
- Select one category and create a poster or digital learning resource explaining how you, as kaiako/ECE professionals, will put your commitment into practice.
- Ensure to give examples, use pictures where you can and define and bullet point your information rather than use long sentences or paragraphs.
- Upload your poster to a journal post and share it with your peers. Review those of your classmates and place respectful feedback if you like.
