Welcome to Exercise Science: Part A! This module is designed to take your learning to the next level after completing Level 4 Anatomy and Physiology. You now have a solid understanding of the major organ systems of the body, and it's time to delve deeper into exercise science! This module will focus on specific body areas and the issues and conditions that personal trainers must be aware of. You will also gain an understanding of how to address these issues and conditions when working with clients.

The specific areas of the body that we’ll cover include the following:

  • The neck, shoulder and Upper Crossed Syndrome.
  • The lumbar spine, pelvis, hip and Lower Crossed Syndrome.
  • The knee and ankle.

In addition, you will learn about overall posture and movement competency, which will build on your current knowledge.

  • The anatomical structures of the area, including bones, ligaments, muscles, tendons, and fascia.
  • Common issues and complaints associated with each area.
  • Functional tests to identify the likely causes of the issue.
  • Correctional strategies for improving or resolving the issue or complaint.

You should spend a total of 100 hours on this module. This includes time for reading and watching of course content, completion of assessment tasks, and self-directed practice and evidence collation.

The fine print

This module relates to numerous Graduate Profile Outcomes (GPOs), including:

  • GPO 1: Design exercise programmes to the industry standard and implement advanced exercise options to enhance client performance.
  • GPO 3: Integrate a broad range of health and wellness factors into an extended exercise intervention programme to meet client goals and objectives.
  • GPO 4: Analyse and select from a range of advanced exercise options underpinned by exercise science to customise exercise assessment and programmes.
  • GPO 5: Design programmes and apply exercise principles within scope of practice using understanding of the indications and contraindications for symptomatic or apparently healthy people.

It supports the following learning Outcome (LO):

  • LO 1: Link the principles of exercise science and nutrition to key physical activities and exercise options when forming exercise programmes
  • LO 3: Interact, engage, and use appropriate evidence-based exercise science resources for the development and implementation of exercise and health improvement programme
  • LO 4: Analyse the role of exercise science as it applies to selecting advanced exercise options for achieving exercise goals
  • LO 5: Apply concepts and theories of exercise science and nutrition in developing exercise programmes which will positively influence health benefits, injury risk and complications for both symptomatic and health individuals.

To ensure a smooth learning experience, we suggest starting this module and assessment tasks at specific weeks.

Assessment and milestones

There are four (4) written case study assessments to complete for this module:

  • Assessment 1 A: (Neck, shoulder and upper crossed syndrome), due at the end of week 2.
  • Assessment 1 B: (LPHC and lower crossed syndrome), due at the end of week 3.
  • Assessment 1 C: (Knee and ankle), due at the end of week 4.
  • Assessment 1 D: (Postural analysis process), due at the end of week 5.
Important

We recommend you submit each case study assessment soon after completing the corresponding topic(s). This way, the content is fresh in your mind, and you can comfortably progress to the next part of your learning.

Throughout the module, you will be guided on when to submit each assessment. This will help you stay on track.

Following these instructions will ensure you are well-prepared for the assessment and submit it on time.

TIP:

  • Do not wait until the end of the module to submit all four (4) case study assessments.
  • Assessment tasks area an open-book, and you should allow 60 minutes to complete each.

Hours of learning per week

Approximately 20 hours.

This includes self-directed practical each week, time for assessments, self-directed study, note-taking, and completing the reading and activities on the NZIS online campus.

This module focuses on the practical application of the theories you've learned, requiring you to put your skills to the test in a real-world setting. There will be some new terminology and theory that you will have to learn.

For the practical application of theory, you'll work with a willing client to apply the functional testing processes you've learned. This hands-on experience will help you hone your skills and develop a deeper appreciation for the practical side of anatomy, physiology, and rehabilitation.

While this module is certainly theoretical in nature, we're committed to providing you with a diverse range of learning materials that will make the journey both engaging and enjoyable. You'll read, watch, and listen to various resources that will help you acquire this knowledge in a fun and interactive way.

Boost your vocabulary on anatomy

This module incorporates many interactive activities with instant feedback to improve your recall and check your understanding frequently. To help you build on your vocabulary when working through your modules, you may wish to:

  • create your own glossary or flashcards to practice key terms.
  • draw and take notes to help you commit the content to memory, and help you work through new knowledge.
  • hover over underlined abbreviations, acronyms, and some technical terms to read the full definition. Try it now by hovering over WHO.

Self-directed practical learning can be helpful for understanding anatomy and physiology. Try the functional tests out yourself before practicing on others. Having an in-depth knowledge of the muscles that act on each joint, is critical to your success in this module.

If you need more practice with muscle location and action, you may wish to supplement and support your learning using an anatomy atlas.

Most public libraries will have anatomy atlases to loan or read on site.

The following list is a good starting point to helping you continue on build on your anatomy vocabulary.

Keep it social

Remember to connect with other students. There is a Q&A Discussion Board for this module.

Live sessions

Don't forget to join our Live Sessions with the online teaching team.

Your course tutors conduct a minimum of one live session per week for each intake. These sessions encompass a variety of topics, which may include the following:

  • Discussing forthcoming assessments.
  • Exploring challenging or intriguing aspects of the learning material.
  • Introducing supplementary topics related to, but not covered in, the learning.
  • Featuring guest speakers discussing relevant subjects, such as industry experts.
  • Engaging in general question and answer sessions.
  • Tackling specific learning components that often raise queries, such as FAQs.
  • Sharing strategies for effective assessment work and optimising online study, such as tips on navigating your time.
Important

These sessions are designed to provide valuable insights, address queries, and offer additional perspectives. While we understand that recordings are available, we highly encourage you to participate in these live interactions. Attending these sessions in real-time not only allows you to actively engage but also offers a unique opportunity to connect with experts and fellow learners. Your presence contributes to a vibrant and collaborative learning environment that can truly elevate your experience.

This Pre-check activity is designed to gauge your current knowledge and understanding of the upcoming topics before we dive into our learning journey.

Take your time, answer to the best of your abilities, and don't worry if you're unsure of some answers. This will help you keep track of your progress and see how much you've learned by the end of this module. Let's get started...
