Welcome to Module 4, where you will learn about the importance of tikanga Māori (Māori customs) and how they influence hauora Māori: Māori health.
Hauora is a holistic approach that encompasses four key dimensions:
- tinana (physical wellbeing)
- wairua (spiritual wellbeing)
- hinengaro (psychological wellbeing)
- whānau (social wellbeing)
In this course you will learn the foundational concepts of a Māori worldview, developing an understanding of the importance of te ao Māori (the Māori worldview) and te reo Māori (the Māori language) for support workers.
The module will look at the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how they are applied in a health and wellbeing setting. You will learn to utilise Māori models of health and wellbeing and consider tikanga in achieving health and wellbeing outcomes.
We will also consider the principles and behaviours from tikanga Māori that promote professionalism and cultural safety. This includes the concept of culturally responsive interaction.
