Regulations, in our context, are a set of guidelines written by the New Zealand Government for all early learning services to comply with and include practices from as part of their daily routines.

Early Childhood services regulations 2008 brings together and summarises the main legal requirements for early childhood education centres. These include:

  • home-based
  • centre-based
  • hospital-based
  • kindergartens
  • specialty schools like Steiner/Waldorf and Montessori.

Service policies and procedures are legal agreements that the service has entered into with the Ministry of Education and must also be followed closely by educators.

Download the Early Childhood services regulations 2008 document and spend some time familiarising yourself with it. For now, we are going to focus on the regulations that relate to the health and safety of the children in our care.
