Welcome to Module 2

This module introduces the importance of culture and communication in the healthcare sector.

In this course, you will look at your cultural identity and how your own cultural identity impacts your role as a support worker. You will learn the importance of self-awareness and respectful communication in a health and wellbeing setting.

Learning outcomes of this module include:

  • describing cultural values and practices, including Māori and Pacific people
  • describe knowledge of communication and engagement with tangata whai ora and their whānau, family and community when working in a health and wellbeing setting
  • demonstrating knowledge of correct communication skills and approaches used in healthcare

This course highlights the communication skills key to building relationships and trust in healthcare settings. We will look at our own cultural identity, learn the importance of self-awareness and communication in a health and wellbeing setting, examine the importance of respect for others, and gain an in-depth understanding of communication and engagement with individuals, families, and communities (tangata, whānau) when working in a health setting.
