Literacy and Numeracy (LNAAT)

Submitted by coleen.yan@edd… on Tue, 08/29/2023 - 11:08

Lower levels of literacy and numeracy (L&N) can be a significant barrier to successful academic outcomes. Although we are all responsible for supporting students to increase their literacy and numeracy capability your responsibilities as a tutor are:

  • To ensure all required LNAAT (Literacy and Numeracy Adult Assessment Tool) assessments are completed within the time above timeframes (by using the Literacy & Numeracy Tracking Report).
  • To support students to understand their LNAAT results following their assessments.
  • To embed L&N activities, including Pathways Awarua, into their teaching to support students to develop their L&N skill levels.
  • To monitor the EPI Literacy & Numeracy Tracking report to ensure all of their students have been assessed within the required time frames and advise the LSL when the next round of assessment codes is required.
  • To review the EPI Literacy & Numeracy Summary report to establish which students sit below the threshold and may require additional support.
  • To identify students via the EPI Literacy & Numeracy Tracking report who have increased in their step score and issue certificates.

Instructions on the complete L&N process, briefings and tools can be located Learner Success HubAssessment Tools.

All students enrolled in a programme at levels 1-4 (regardless of funding source) must be assessed in both literacy & numeracy. However, once a student reaches the Step 4 literacy or Step 5 numeracy threshold, no further assessment will be required. This includes where LNAAT was previously completed with another provider.

Level 5 students are not required to do LNAAT assessment. Tutors must ensure all level 1-4 students complete the LNAAT as follows:

In general (excluding exceptions in above table), students will be assessed using LNAAT as follows:

  • PRE-ASSESSMENT occurs within first 2 weeks of enrolment.
  • MID COURSE ASSESSMENT occurs at the midway point - approximately 10 weeks in.
  • POST-ASSESSMENT occurs within the last 4 weeks of their enrolment.

Youth, adaptive version assessments and individual learner codes are to be used for all students and will be created by your Campus Administrator or the LSL.

Students will access the following website from the NZMA homepage to complete their LNAAT assessments, under assessment conditions.

Tutors are required to use the PowerBI reports to identify when assessments need to take place. The LSL will however remind you if this is not completed in a timely manner.

Your LSL will input LNAAT results into SELMA, within the timeframes as per the above requirements. The results entered in SELMA will identify the step and score.

There are a number of resources and guides to support you with this and these can be found in the Learner Success Hub.

One of these resources is the ‘Assessment Tool Handbook’ which includes step by step instructions on how to help your students to understand their L&N results, and how to set goals that will help them to improve their L&N skill levels.

The Learner Success Team are also able to support you with the delivery of the L&N programme and can mentor you on strategies to ensure your students are improving their L&N abilities.

Students on our Literacy and Numeracy Programme are expected to spend 10 minutes a day on Pathways Awarua. This can be completed during class time or as SDL.

Pathways Awarua is an online learning system intended to support adult learners to strengthen their numeracy and reading skills. As educators, your access to Pathways Awarua enables you to set up your class as a group and track their progress as they work through module. Alternatively, your learner success co-ordinator will send you an email with a pre generated join code for you to share with your students.

Once you have registered as an educator, you will be able to….

  • View learners’ progress
  • Recommend modules for student to complete
  • Print certificates

It’s recommended you complete the modules on How to use Pathways Awarua, to familiarise yourself with the interface and the functionality available.

Students will gain points for any work they complete in Numeracy, Reading, Writing and Number Facts sections and are awarded certificates as they progress. This tool can become quite addictive and rewarding for students as they see themselves progress. As a tutor this enables you to challenge your students, particularly those with a lower ability to be proactive about their own learning and future.

It doesn't have to take a lot of time, but it will take some encouragement and reinforcement of the opportunity they have to grow their skills. Just log in once a week and see who has been active, award certificates at class meetings, discuss progress at Qtime and you should see the results!

The Learner Success Team can support you with the delivery of the L&N mentor you on strategies to ensure your students are improving their L&N abilities.

An instructor in a classroom

Congratulations on almost completing Module 4. You have now been provided with an overview of some of the tools and processors that will support you in your new role.

Before proceeding onto Module 5, you will be required to complete your own Literacy and Numeracy assessment and register with Pathways Awarua.

Your literacy and numeracy assessment IS NOT A PASS OR FAIL however it will provide you with an overview of your own literacy and numeracy skill set and also first hand experience of the LNATT tool that the students will be using.

Please ask your LSL for your individual assessment code (one for literacy and one for numeracy). Once you have these please select the below URL which will take you to an external link that differs from the current NZMA learning platform.

https://assess.literacyandnumeracyforadults.com/LearnerLogin.aspx

Then enter your assessment code:

Each assessment will take about 1 hour however you are able to take a break and come back to it at a later time. Set yourself up in a quiet location and ensure all of your responses are authentically yours. The use of AI tools are not permitted as this does not provide a true representation of your current skill set.

You will also be advised on when you can and can't use calculators as you make your way through the assessment.

At the end of your assessment you will see your results. Please take a snapshot of these and keep these safe for future referral.

Once you have completed your L&N assessment, we then need you to sign in to Pathways Awarua (as this is one of the tools we use to support L&N development).

Please select the following link to register: https://pathwaysawarua.com/

You must register as an educator and select NZMA as the provider.

Once you have completed your registration, please select Educator pathways followed by the “How to use Pathways Awarua” module and begin to work through these to gain an initial understanding of how this tool works.

Before proceeding onto Module 5, please connect with your Campus Manager and L&D lead to review the following:

  • Discussion on the LNAAT tool and how you use this in your class to support the students literacy and numeracy journey.
  • Review your Pathways Awarua login and ensure you have an understanding of how the tool works.
