This Level 4 certificate is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to support individuals with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) across diverse institutional and community settings in Aotearoa New Zealand. Tailored for educators, parents, and workplaces aiming to create inclusive environments, the course covers a range of topics.
- From understanding Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalculia to exploring relationships with other neurodiverse conditions like ADHD and Autism, you'll gain insights into signs in both adults and children.
- The programme emphasises positive perspectives on neurodiversity and delves into the identification process, assistive technologies, and effective support approaches.
- Cultural considerations and holistic strategies are highlighted, offering a comprehensive view.
- As a student, you'll not only grasp theoretical concepts but also explore practical aspects, including personalised intervention plans.
On completion of this course, you'll be well-prepared to make a difference in classrooms, workplaces, and the wider community, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for individuals with SLD.

How will you learn?
Learning hours are asynchronous. This means you complete them in your own time. There is no set class time, and learning takes place at different times for students/ākonga enrolled in the programme. You are encouraged to interact with other students/ākonga through forums and group messaging. Keep in mind that not everyone likes to study when you do, so you may need to wait for a response.
Total learning hours are 400 hours. That is approximately 28 hours per week of full-time study (over 14 weeks) or 10 hours of part-time study (over 40 weeks), including self-directed learning.
The learning hours include:
- Reading, watching, and completing the activities on the online campus.
- Completing assessments.
- Self-directed learning.
Assessments/Aromatawai
A total of 40 credits are awarded for the programme.
There are 4 assessments to complete, two for each of the two modules that make up this course. Assessments will be awarded an achieved or not-achieved result. All learning outcomes must be met to obtain an achieved result. All assessments must be completed in full, with all answers correct, for an achieved result.
Assessments are recorded as follows:
- Achieved – all work/unit has been achieved to the standards set in the assessment and performance criteria.
- Not Achieved – the student/ākonga has yet to complete the relevant work to be awarded the assessment or unit.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Recognise indicators of SLD in individuals based on current research and theories of SLD.
- Support individuals with SLD to progress in a class or workplace and in mainstream society.
- Collaborate with learners, teachers, parents, and caregivers to produce individualised intervention plans for learners with SLD.
A graduate of a level 4 certificate can:
- Demonstrate broad operational and theoretical knowledge in a field of work or study.
- Select and apply solutions to familiar and sometimes unfamiliar problems.
- Select and apply a range of standard and non-standard processes relevant to the field of work or study.
- Apply a range of communication skills relevant to the field of work or study.
- Demonstrate the self-management of learning and performance under broad guidance.
- Demonstrate some responsibility for performance of others.
