Unit of Competency

This module consists of CHCMGT005 Facilitate workplace debriefing and support processes.

Welcome to the Module

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to monitor and support workers. This includes implementing support processes to manage stress and the emotional well-being of self or colleagues working in varied health and community service contexts. It also involves facilitating structured debriefing sessions to colleagues following incidents with the potential to impact on health and wellbeing. This unit applies to leadership or management roles where the individual provides peer to peer support to colleagues and refers to specialised support services in line with organisation guidelines as required. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

The key outcomes you will achieve upon completion of this module include:

  • Understand the purpose and benefits of debriefing in the context of community services.
  • Identify situations and contexts where debriefing may be required.
  • Plan and prepare for debriefing sessions, considering the specific needs of individuals and the team.
  • Develop strategies for creating a safe and supportive environment for debriefing.
  • Facilitate debriefing sessions effectively, utilizing appropriate communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Manage group dynamics during debriefing to ensure a constructive and supportive atmosphere.
  • Recognize and respond to the individual needs of team members during debriefing.
  • Provide appropriate support and referral mechanisms for individuals requiring further assistance.
  • Document the debriefing process accurately and comprehensively, maintaining confidentiality and privacy.
  • Use appropriate recording and reporting mechanisms in line with organizational policies.
  • Reflect on the effectiveness of debriefing processes and identify areas for improvement.
  • Seek feedback from participants and use it to enhance future debriefing sessions.
  • Understand the impact of work-related stress on individuals and teams in the community services sector.
  • Implement strategies to address and mitigate work-related stress.
  • Demonstrate cultural competence in facilitating debriefing processes, recognizing and respecting diversity in the community services workforce.

To achieve competency for the unit within this module, you must complete all theory and project assessments at the end of this module (short answer questions, case studies, project and role play).
