Welcome to Module 2 - Applied Anatomy and Physiology

In this module you will gain technical knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, rehabilitation processes and more as they relate to sport, fitness, recreation, and exercise contexts. You will also be able to apply these concepts through evidence-based practice.

Credits  15
Learning Hours  150
Learning Outcomes
  • LO2.1 Analyse anatomical and physiological adaptations to sport and exercise across the human lifecycle as an SRE practitioner.
  • LO2.2 Develop and apply health and wellness solutions for rehabilitation and injury prevention as an SRE practitioner.
  • LO2.3 Analyse the effects of exercise on physiological functions in sport, recreation, and exercise contexts.
Assessment

There are three assessment events for this module:

    • Assessment 1: Written short answer exam – A & P Through the lifecycle
    • Assessment 2: Case study written report – Rehabilitation and injury prevention
    • Assessment 3: Research case study report – Acute and chronic effects of exercise

Your online and self-directed learning has been designed to supplement your face-to-face study.  For that reason, it is important you follow the online learning schedule below.  Your online lessons are typically structured in two parts.  The first part will be used to recap and add to the key content covered in your face-to-face classes that week (SDL).  The second part will cover new theory learning for the current topic or introduce theory for next week's topic.  It is recommended that you structure your online learning as follows.  Part 1 – to be completed throughout the week.  It is best to start this following day 2 of face-to-face learning); and Part 2 – to be completed before next week's first face-to-face lesson (it is best to start this following day 4 of face-to-face learning).

    Week 1

    Topics:

    • PART 1 – Recap of anatomical terminology. New learning: the skeletal system (bones). [Modules 2.1.1 – 2.2.5]
    • PART 2 – Joint structure and function content recap. Joint movements recap and practical application tasks. New learning: Common bone and joint related conditions. [Modules 2.2.6 – 2.2.9]
    Week 2

    Topics:

    • PART 1 – Recap of nervous system division and key structures. New learning for nervous system continues. [Modules 2.3.1 – 2.3.2]
    • PART 2 – Exam 1 (Part A) preparation tasks. New learning: Introduction to muscle structure and function. [Modules 2.3.3 – 2.3.6]
    Week 3

    Topics:

    • PART 1 - Recap of learning from day 2 and 3 of face-to-face lessons. New content: Muscle physiology. [Modules 2.4.1 – 2.4.5]
    • PART 2 - Recap of day 4 muscular system learning. Continuation of muscle physiology content – muscle fibre types and adaptation. [Modules 2.4.6 – 2.4.9]
    Week 4

    Topics:

    • PART 1 - Recap on changes to muscle across the life stages and common muscle imbalances and what to do about them. Introduction to the cardiovascular system. [Modules 2.4.10 – 2.5.2]
    • PART 2 - Recap on measures of heart function covered in day 4. Blood & blood pressure. Adaptations to the CV system due to exercise and across the life stages. Introduction to respiratory structures and their functions. [Modules 2.5.3 – 2.6.1]
    Week 5

    Topics:

    • PART 1 - Recap tasks on mechanics of breathing, measures of respiratory efficiency & Acute effects of exercise on these.

New content: Gas exchange. [Modules 2.6.2 – 2.6.4]

    • PART 2 - Recap of face-to-face learning on final parts of respiratory system. Preparation tasks for Assessment 1 – Part B. [Modules 2.6.5 – 2.6.6]
    Week 6

The online learning for this week is continuous (not in parts). It is largely unrelated to the rest of the face-to-face learning done this week.

    Topics:

    • Continuation of online research and writing guide for assessment completion.
    • Introduction of Assessment 3 – Case Study Research Report.
    • Time for assessment task completion – (Task 1)

    [Modules 2.7.1 – 2.7.4]

    Week 7

The online learning for this week is continuous (not in parts). It is largely unrelated to the rest of the face-to-face learning done this week.

    Topics:
