Kia ora and welcome to the first module in your programme: Introduction to the Aotearoa New Zealand Health and Wellbeing Sector. We're excited to have you on this haerenga ako -learning journey with us.

In this module, you’ll build a strong foundation by exploring the unique aspects of our healthcare system, its history, and its development. We’ll delve into Te Tiriti o Waitangi, examining how it shapes healthcare today and honours Māori as tangata whenua. You’ll also discover different definitions of health and explore a variety of health models and approaches. We’ll cover the vital role of the support worker and deepen our understanding of what vulnerability means for tāngata whaiora (those seeking health).

We’re excited to start this journey with you as you prepare to make a meaningful impact in the health and wellbeing sector. Me tīmata tātou -Let’s get started!

Your study materials are available 24/7 on this NZMA online learning platform, accessible from all devices.

For on-the-go study, using your cellphone to read through the topics will be convenient. However, for the best experience, we recommend working from your laptop/desktop computer. Large-screen devices allow you to view large-format documents or images easily; you will come across quite a few of these as you scroll through the topics.

Review the following statements about study and research skills. Reflect on whether these statements accurately reflect your abilities or whether you need help in one or more areas.

  • I can write my own study notes and use them to help me learn.
  • I can read text to find a specific piece of information and the main ideas.
  • I can interpret information from graphical material such as tables, charts, maps, lists, infographics, etc.
  • I can organise information and data to reveal patterns and themes.
  • I know how to do a search on Google (or another search engine) that gets targeted results.
  • I can determine the credibility of sources, information, data, and ideas.
  • I know how to write a reference list for any research I use in my work.
  • I understand the meaning of plagiarism and I understand all work submitted MUST be my own.
  • I can identify when I need assistance from others.
  • I observe ethical, cultural, social and team (ECST) practices when interacting with others.
  • I can manage my time effectively to meet deadlines, attend classes and maintain my personal commitments.

Remember that skills can be learned and developed, so don't be discouraged if you need help with quite a few study and research skills.

You can revisit the Ready Set Go! - Onboarding modules or book a one-on-one session with your Learning Support person to discuss this.
