Welcome to Work Effectively and Sustainably in the Construction Industry. As you progress through the learning, you will start to establish a basic understanding of what is required to work effectively and sustainably in the construction industry and the structure of the construction industry and the role expectations of workers.

As you progress through the content, you will learn how to:

  • describe the role of a tradesperson or skilled operator in the construction industry.
  • identify a tradesperson or skilled operator role and conduct a personal skills audit to identify skills gaps
  • work effectively in a construction industry team to:
    • plan work tasks
    • review a team’s purpose
    • identify roles, responsibilities, goals, plans and objectives
    • complete work tasks by following guidelines, directions and instructions
    • resolve problems.
  • identify environmental and resource efficiency requirements
  • identify and report environmental hazards
  • identify and report resource efficiency issues.

It is important to understand that Legislation is one of the fundamental aspects that need to be considered in the construction industry, and you will see it quite frequently. You will also find that each construction area has its own specific Legislation, which you will now learn.

Legislation in the construction industry ensures the quality of constructing buildings and ensures the safety of people. The following legislation is relevant to this module:

  • Building Act 2004 (and relevant state and territory instruments)
  • Building Regulations (relevant to each state/territory)
  • Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (and relevant state and territory instruments)
  • Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011 (and relevant state and territory instruments)
  • The Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (and relevant state and territory instruments)
  • The Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulations 1979 (and relevant state and territory instruments)
  • Other state and territory-based legislation and policies affecting buildings as described in NCC2019 (See Schedule 1)
  • Relevant local laws depending on the local government area.

Activity

Before moving onto the next topic, look up your local legislation and browse a handful of different laws and check to see if there are any changes or there looks to be changed in the process. For example, this could be to do with specific signage your area must display or perhaps specific additional documentation.
