Welcome to CPC40120 CIV in Building and Construction (Building)!

This qualification reflects the role of builders, site managers and managers of small to medium-sized building businesses who apply knowledge of structural principles, codes, standards and legal requirements to Class 1 and 10, to a maximum of two storeys and Class 2 to 9 Type C constructions, and who plan and supervise safe building and construction work, prepare and administer contracts, and who apply quality principles to building and construction projects.

Building relates to construction and Site Management is about managing the factors around construction, such as the deployment of crews with specialised skills (including builders), product compliance, deployment of contract specialised skills, weather and site location.

In this course, you will learn about construction project management including quality management, contract administration, construction project estimation, labour and material management, building scientific principles, managing business finances and workplace relationships.

This online course contains eighty-hour work placement, which is embedded in five modules. Enrolled students need to obtain a white card (or a general construction induction card) before commencing the placement. 1 UP Building and Construction - Case Study - 'Intranet' This module stands as the simulated workplace environment for the simulations and projects. The module presents UP Building and Construction fictitious construction company and provides pre-developed policies and procedures to inform your learning and assessment.
2 CPCCBC4007 - Plan building and construction work Develop the skills and knowledge required to plan on-site activities, employ human resources and obtain physical resources. You will learn about sequencing construction tasks, identifying appropriately skilled labour, physical resources and suppliers and assessing their availability, and developing documentation and advice for relevant authorities.
3 CPCCBC4003 - Select, prepare and administer a construction contract Develop the skills and knowledge required to select, prepare and administer contracts for commercial and residential construction projects. You will learn about contract selection, administration of a range of documents related to the contract and to identify causes of breach of contract.
4 CPCCBC4002 - Manage work health and safety in the building and construction workplace* Develop the skills and knowledge required to inspect workplaces for hazards and conduct work health and safety (WHS) risk analyses. You will learn about the development and implementation of appropriate responses to mitigate risks to meet government legislation and regulations.
5 CPCCBC4009 - Apply legal requirements to building and construction projects Develop the skills and knowledge required to apply legal requirements to residential and commercial building and construction projects. You will learn about meeting licensing requirements, complying with financial and insurance laws and meeting the conditions of building contracts.
6 CPCCBC4001 - Apply building codes and standards to the construction process for Class 1 and 10 buildings Develop the skills and knowledge required to access, interpret and apply relevant building codes and standards applicable to the National Construction Code (NCC) Classes 1 and 10 buildings, to a maximum of two storeys. You will learn about the structure of the NCC and how to access relevant information from the code as applicable to various building projects.
7 CPCCBC4053 - Apply building codes and standards to the construction process for Class 2 to 9 Type C buildings Develop the skills and knowledge required to access, interpret and apply relevant building codes and standards applicable to National Construction Code (NCC) Class 2 to 9 Type C building projects. You will learn about the structure of the NCC and how to access relevant information from the code as applicable to various building projects.
8 CPCCBC4012 - Read and interpret plans and specifications Develop the skills and knowledge required to read and interpret plans and specifications applicable to residential and commercial projects. You will learn about site characteristics, features of the proposed building and details of the construction.
9 CPCCBC4010 - Apply structural principles to residential and commercial constructions Develop the skills and knowledge required to apply structural principles to the construction of residential or commercial structures. You will learn about applying structural principles to footing, floor, wall and roof systems.
10 CPCCBC4014 - Prepare simple building sketches and drawings Develop the skills and knowledge required to prepare sketches and drawings used for communicating ideas to clients and other parties. You will learn about capturing design concepts and options taken from architectural drawings to create simpler versions.
11 CPCCBC4018 - Apply site surveys and set-out procedures to building and construction projects* Develop the skills and knowledge required to use technical instruments and levelling and surveying techniques to accurately set-out a building on site. You will learn about determining grid levels and developing contour plans.
12 CPCSUS4002 - Use building science principles to construct energy efficient buildings Develop the skills and knowledge required to incorporate building science principles into the construction of energy efficient buildings. You will learn about research and the use of constructive thinking and problem-solving processes to identify appropriate sustainable solutions. This is relevant to those who apply building science principles to construction of energy efficient residential and commercial buildings.
13 CPCCBC4004 - Identify and produce estimated costs for building and construction projects Develop the skills and knowledge required to establish estimated costs associated with the acquisition of materials and labour for building and construction projects. You will learn about factoring in relevant overhead costs and margins.
14 CPCCBC4005 - Produce labour and material schedules for ordering Develop the skills and knowledge required to produce schedules for physical and human resources and materials for residential or commercial projects. You will learn about monitoring project schedules and tracking and recording costs as they are incurred.
15 CPCCBC5019 - Manage building and construction business finances Develop the skills and knowledge required to manage and administer finances within a building and construction business. You will learn about managing business financial risks, revenue and expenditure and meeting statutory financial obligations.
16 CPCCBC4008 - Supervise site communication and administration processes for building and construction projects* Develop the skills and knowledge required to supervise site communications, monitor and maintain compliance with codes and standards and implement project administration processes on a building and construction project. You will also develop the skills and knowledge required to supervise the administration of quality control compliance and the use of site communications and record keeping systems; and conduct onsite inspections to complete the required project administration processes.
17 BSBPMG422 - Apply project quality management techniques Develop the skills and knowledge required to enhance project outcomes by contributing to quality planning, applying quality policies and procedures, and contributing to continuous improvement in projects.
18 BSBLDR413 - Lead effective workplace relationships* Develop the skills, knowledge and outcomes required to use leadership to promote team cohesion. You will learn about motivating, mentoring, coaching and developing the team and forming the bridge between the management of the organisation and team members.
19 CPCCBC4006 - Select, procure and store construction materials for building and construction projects* Develop the skills and knowledge required to supervise the systems through which construction materials are typically selected, acquired and stored on site for residential and commercial building and construction projects. You will learn about relevant building and construction materials and technologies, environmental effects on materials and identifying non-compliant materials to ensure the delivered construction materials meet National Construction Code (NCC) requirements and contract and service specifications.
20 CPCCBC4021 - Minimise waste on the building and construction site Develop the skills and knowledge required to support sustainable building practices by minimising waste removed from residential or commercial buildings and construction sites. You will learn about planning a waste minimisation strategy, calculating cost benefits and implementing alternative waste minimisation systems.

Structured Workplace Learning and Assessment

Structured Workplace Learning and Assessment (SWLA) is a compulsory part of CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building), facilitating the opportunity for students to apply their skills and knowledge gained throughout the course in a workplace environment.

The Work Placement commitment is 80 hours in total and is aligned to five (5) units within the course. Work Placement is split into three (3) blocks as follows:

Prior to commencing SWLA, you must successfully complete a range of knowledge-based assessments relating to the skills and competencies that are to be applied and developed during your SWL A experience.

Before commencing SWLA:

  • Complete the Host Organisation Approval Form providing required details about your workplace, its facilities and resources and the details of your proposed Workplace Supervisor.
  • Once the Host Organisation is approved, provide a copy of the Supervisor Guide to Structured Workplace Learning and Assessment to your proposed Workplace Supervisor. 
  • Have the general construction induction training, commonly known as: 'White Card', completed.
  • Provide all required documentation to the Host Organisation as per their policies and procedures. Confirm the requirements with the workplace! This may include:
    • White Card
    • National Criminal Record Check/Police Check
    • Vaccination certificate against infectious diseases
    • Confidentiality agreement signed.
  • Ensure you have all required personal protective equipment necessary for the workplace.
