A domestic tourist is a person who travels within a country’s borders and stays a minimum of one night away from home.
E.g. If you live in Rotorua and you spend a few nights away in Wellington then you are a domestic tourist.

- It is the mainstay of tourism
- It provides employment
- It provides many tourist facilities which would otherwise not be available to the region/city
- It aids regional development, especially in areas outside the main tourist routes
