What are Domestic Tourists?

A domestic tourist is a person who travels within a country’s borders and stays a minimum of one night away from home.

E.g. If you live in Rotorua and you spend a few nights away in Wellington then you are a domestic tourist.

Domestic tourism is extremely important for the travel and tourism industry because:

  • It is the mainstay of tourism
  • It provides employment
  • It provides many tourist facilities which would otherwise not be available to the region/city
  • It aids regional development, especially in areas outside the main tourist routes
