Before we launch into the finer details of preparing for field experience, we felt that it would be important to take a moment and learn some of the key terms you are going to come across.

Field Experience

Field experience is the practical experience gained by students in the healthcare sector. Students are required to complete a minimum number of hours throughout the duration of their studies.

Field Experience Assessment Document

The assessment document outlines what the student has to achieve or demonstrate in order to meet the field experience Learning Outcomes.

Field Experience Attendance Record

The Field Experience Attendance Record is a form that students complete throughout their field experience to record the number of hours completed which a senior member of staff then signs off. This record is to be submitted upon completion of these hours.

Lecturer/Assessor

The Lecturer/Assessor is an HCANZ academic staff member, available to support students throughout their field experience hours, and ensure they are on track to meet their Learning Outcomes.

Feel free to come back to this section for clarification at any point throughout your studies.

Field experience is the practical experience you will gain in the healthcare sector, where you can practically apply everything you are learning within your academic courses.

You are required to complete a minimum of 100 hours of field experience throughout the duration of your studies, either in a voluntary or paid position. You have flexibility as to how you complete these hours, however it must be agreed upon between the healthcare service and yourself.

Here are a few options you could consider:

Just remember, these are only options, and the flexibility is there to support you. We are here to help you to find the best arrangement that suits your needs, and ensure you are progressing at a steady rate, and are not left with too many hours to complete hurriedly at the end.

Field Experience Attendance Record

Upon completion of your program, you will be required to submit a verified record of the number of hours you have completed. This is evidence that the minimum number of field experience hours have been completed.

To do this, you will use what we call a Field Experience Attendance Record. Using this document, you will make note of your hours throughout your studies, and a senior member of staff will sign them off.

Field Experience Handbook

The Field Experience Handbook has been designed to support you throughout the duration of your studies.

It is here that you will find relevant regulations and rules including information on health and safety, dress code and professional conduct.

We would encourage you to make this Handbook your first port of call if issues, concerns or questions arise.

HCANZ Care Tasks Handbook

The HCANZ Care Tasks Handbook is a resource and a guide, providing step-by-step processes for care tasks that form the very foundation of your role as a Healthcare Assistant.

The Handbook is underpinned by the four principles of person-centred care which are enabling, personalised, coordinated, and dignified, compassionate and respectful care.

This Handbook is highly practical and will provide you with methods of care which really embody these principles. Use it to inform and underpin your practice, or as a reference point if you come across anything you are unsure of.

Field Experience Assessment Document

The Field Experience Assessment document is the tool used to record your achievement of the field experience Learning Outcomes. It provides indicators as to how your Learning Outcomes might be met, and opportunities for the Lecturer/Assessor to provide written feedback.

Your assessment will be based on:
Observations and evaluations of your practice by the Lecturer/Assessor
Discussions held between you and the Lecturer/Assessor
Written tasks completed throughout your academic courses and Course Guides
