Choosing a workplace/s can be a pretty daunting task!

There are a few things to keep in mind when finding a suitable workplace/s.

You can have more than one (1) workplace. You are required need to submit a workplace approval form for each workplace. You cannot commence work placement until the workplace and the workplace supervisor are approved.

You are required to complete workplace tasks with the following animals:

  • Companion animals (more than one species and more than one life stage)
  • Wildlife/native animals
  • Declared pests
  • Livestock You may not be able to find one (1) workplace that caters for all of these animals.
Sub Topics

You are required to complete work placement at an Animal Care Facility.

Animal Care Facilities include:

  • Veterinary Clinics
  • Zoos or wildlife sanctuary’s
  • Pet shops
  • Rescue organisations
  • Animal holding facilities or pounds
  • Boarding Kennels
  • Cattery’s
  • Dog/Cat daycares
  • Commerical farming
  • Animal retreats
  • Grooming salons
  • Mobile dog wash

The workplace needs to meet the following requirements:

  • Is an Animal Care Facility
  • Has the capacity to take on a student and train them
  • Will allow you to complete your SWLA assessments including recording physical demonstrations
  • Is a business and has an ABN
  • Meet the workplace resource requirements (a full list can be found in the Host organisation approval form)

The workplace supervisor is required to:

  • Have a minimum of a Certificate II in Animal Care (or equivalent – Certificate II in Animal Studies)

 

OR

  • Have been working in the Animal Care industry for a minimum of two (2) years.
