‘Network and systems administrators manage and support the daily operation of computer systems and networks throughout an organisation, ensuring reliable performance and data integrity in local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and organisation intranets.’1

Networking administration and systems administration are often used interchangeably. However, networking administrators oversee the network (a group of computers connected) in a network. Whereas systems administrators work with computer hardware and software (the computer systems which make it function).

Watch the ‘Introduction to Systems Administration’ video [4:05 minutes] and see if you are ready to move from being a system user to the administrator who makes it all work on systems administration:

Cisco NetEss 2.0 Beginning of Course Survey

Before you begin your curated learning in the NetEss 2.0 you will need to take the Beginning of Course Survey. This will take you 10-20 minutes approximately.

Remember

To access NetEss 2.0’s links you will need to:

  1. Be logged in to your netacad learning portal
  2. Have completed the Beginning of Course Survey
  3. Have accessed one of the Cisco modules
  4. Downloaded Cisco Packet Tracer.

Online Connections - Cisco Module 2

You may know a bit about what it takes to create a network, including the internet. But do you know all the ways to connect online? For instance, how does your mobile phone connect? How do network components work together? If you saw a diagram of your school’s network, would you understand what you were looking at?

Topic Title Topic Objective
Wireless Networks Describe the different types of networks used by cell phones and mobile devices.
Local Network Connections Describe the requirements for host connectivity.

Build a Simple Network - Cisco Module 4

A simple peer-to-peer network usually involves directly hardwiring two computers together so that they can share files. Hardwiring requires the correct cables. This module explains the three types of cables used in networks, how they are connected, and how you can be sure that your peer-to-peer network is working properly. It is a fun and easy to start networking at your home or school.

Topic Title Topic Objective
Ethernet Cabling Describe Ethernet twisted-pair cables.
Coaxial and Fibre-Optic Describe coaxial and fibre-optic cabling.
Twisted-Pair Operation Explain how a twisted-pair cable transmits and receives signals.
Verify Connectivity Verify connectivity in a simple routed network.
