Knowing who your customers are is your first step to effectively marketing to them. If you don’t get specific about who they are, you’ll spend a whole lot of time and money chasing people who will never actually buy from you – no matter how good your marketing is!

So how do you figure out who your customers are? The most successful brands create what’s called customer or buyer “personas”.

Make a copy of this Customer Personas Template (click File > Make a copy), and then follow the steps below.

  1. Create a questionnaire (using the template as a guide) for your ideal customer.
  2. Have a think about who your ideal customer is, then get in touch with as many people as possible who fit that profile. Find at least 5 people, but around 30 is ideal!
  3. Interview those people using your questionnaire.
  4. Using the results of your interview, find the common elements between your interviewees. Use these commonalities to build a basic customer persona.
