Transcript 1.1.1 Behaviour Modification: Welcome

Behaviour modification is the gold standard of influencing change in your clients. In this module, you’ll learn how to support clients to modify their behaviour to improve their health and fitness. You’ll also self-assess your current level of health and fitness, and current knowledge of personal training.

We’ll cover:

  • Health and fitness
  • Know yourself
  • Behavioural psychology
  • Communication
  • Selling an experience

The fine print:

This module relates to Graduate Profile Outcome (GPO) 4: Apply motivational and communication techniques to enhance individual participant commitment to a personalised exercise programme.

It supports Learning Outcome (LO) 4.2: Develop and use motivational strategies to support and optimise client performance (3 credits). This is assessed in a future module, Special Populations and Exercise Adherence.

To ensure a smooth learning experience, we suggest starting this module at specific weeks.

Full-time students

We recommend starting the module in week 1.

  • Hours of learning per week: Approximately 37.5 hours
This includes 12.5 hours of self-directed fitness-based practical each week, time for assessments, self-directed study, note-taking, and completing the content on the NZIS online campus.

Part-time students

We recommend starting the module in week 1.

  • Hours of learning per week: Approximately 20 hours
This includes 5 hours of self-directed fitness-based practical each week, time for assessments, self-directed study, note-taking, and completing the content on the NZIS online campus.

Milestones

Complete the 3 forum activities before starting the next module:

  • Global status report: Increasing physical activity in New Zealand
  • Fitness trends: Top 10 research
  • What’s your story?

This module is set up to prepare you for online learning and to get the most out of the course. You’ll find a mixture of things to read, watch, listen to, and do.

Interactive activities, like multiple-choice quizzes and drag-and-drops, give you instant feedback.

  • Check your understanding – is there a section you need to study more?
  • Apply what you’ve learnt to a common scenario
  • Cement learning – practice makes perfect
  • Take a break from scrolling and get your mind active

These activities are unassessed, and you can have as many attempts as you want. In this first module, you’ll be asked to reflect on your own health and fitness. Keep your self-assessment somewhere handy and check-in periodically as you progress through the course.

Meet your peers!

When you are studying online, it can be easy to fall into a habit of not interacting with anyone. But personal training is all about interacting with others! Spend time in the forum talking with other students. Get to know each other and help each other out. You’ll be prompted to respond to some activities in the forum. But don’t let this limit you. You can also use the forum for Q&A, assessment help, to arrange meet-ups for group fitness, or to share your thoughts with a bunch of people that are all connected by their love of health and fitness!

Personal training is a practical subject

You might be studying online, but it’s still about movement! Get comfortable taking selfies and recording yourself. Watch back and think “what am I nailing and what needs more work?” You can upload photos and videos to the forums for feedback from other students and tutors.

For full-time students, you should aim to do 12.5 hours of fitness-based self-directed study each week. For part-time students, aim to do 5 hours each week.

Study to suit you

Do you find note-taking helps? Digital notes on Notepad, Word, Pages, Google Docs, or any one of your favourite document tools can help you make sense of new knowledge. If you prefer keeping a physical notebook – that’s cool too! Do what works for you. At the end of each topic, challenge yourself to write your own summary in language you understand and can refer back to.

If you’ve used a personal trainer before, you’ll know that before jumping into programme design, you do pre-screening and health and fitness testing. This pre-check is like that!

You’re here because you are passionate about health and fitness. There’s probably a bunch of stuff you already know! Don’t sweat it if there are questions you don’t know the answers to. By the end of this module, you’ll be scoring 100%.
