How to be a good netizen

Katelyn is a student at NZMA.

Everyone likes feeling safe in their online space, and that’s especially true while learning.

While much of your learning will be independent, you will still be interacting with others and will have an impact on others. Try and make that impact a good one. Every interaction you have is an opportunity to spread some positivity and kindness! In the Online Campus, you might communicate with others by:

  • providing feedback either one-on-one through messaging or in a forum
  • sharing your own experiences in a forum
  • requesting help from one of the other students in the programme
  • messaging or emailing your tutor.

This video was created from a survey of online students and provides 14 'rules' to follow that will ensure you keep all your online relationships happy and safe.

At NZMA we expect our students to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner, in accordance with our Code of Conduct (found in our Student Handbook).

Students should also be aware of the following security requirements:

  • Your logins and passwords: ensure that the password for your Online Campus login is strong and cannot be hacked by others. Use symbols such as #&%!, and use a combination of capitals and numbers in order to create strong, alpha-numeric passwords.
  • Think before you share: do not share files or sites with others that you do not know. Most importantly, never share your login with any other student or staff member of NZMA.
  • Privacy: ensure that your privacy settings for all accounts you use, both privately and personally, are regularly reviewed and are set to maximum strength.
  • Scams, hoaxes, and viruses: do not click on any links or share information from an email address you do not recognise. If you have any suspicions about an email – DO NOT OPEN IT.
  • Harassment or bullying: it is a breach of our school policy for any form of bullying or harassment to occur online (including via mobile phone). If this is occurring, save the messages and provide these to your tutor or your Campus Manager.
  • Remember your digital footprint: whatever you do on the internet, it will remain there forever. Think about what you are going to say or do before you leave a trail that might catch up with you later in your career.
  • Know your rights and obligations: always read the privacy policies and collection notices of all websites and software you use to understand how your private information may be used and shared by other companies.
