What is academic integrity?

Academic integrity is understanding and practicing honesty and ethical behaviour in your learning. It is a set of skills that enables you to find, read and synthesise information, while acknowledging where those ideas originated.
Academic integrity means doing the right thing, even when no one else is watching. It is a practice that flows from academic life into the workplace, informed by your values, and facilitating ethical practice in your career.

We often refer to a situation where one breaches academic integrity standards, as academic misconduct. Plagiarism is one of the most common forms of academic misconduct.

Searching and evaluating library/research sources

To avoid plagiarism or any form of academic misconduct, you need to have the skills to be able to identify suitable sources of information and learning and incorporate these effectively and correctly into your studies at all levels. This includes acknowledging your sources of information.

Using AI systems to generate your answers for assessments

The use of ChatGPT or similar AI systems to generate/write your assessment answers is considered a breach of academic integrity.

Using Turnitin

Some of our programme use Turnitin. Turnitin is a platform that can be used to help you assess the originality of your work in some of our programmes. It does so by detecting text that matches with other online sources or documents. When you submit your work through the submission point, it will go through Turnitin and return a report of how much your text matches with existing resources. It is your responsibility to ensure that any matching text is duly acknowledged or reworked and cited accordingly. Failure to do that may lead to your assessor determining that you have been engaged in academic misconduct.

It's important to approach your education with integrity and a genuine desire to learn. If you're struggling with assessments, it's better to seek help from your tutor or your classmates to help you understand the material better.
