Frequently Asked Questions about online learning

We deliver our learning on a purpose-built system for the modern student. This learning mode is called facilitated asynchronous learning, which offers students all of the convenience of online learning, and provides structure and support when needed. It has programme start and end dates, expectations of weekly learning hours, set due dates for assessments, and live (synchronous online) sessions regularly. And you can easily access your learning and complete activities from your phone or tablet if you want to while you’re out and about.

Our Online Campus should work on any platform, but our development team ranks Chrome as the best to use for our platform. Ensure your operating systems are up to date including your mobile phone system (including your mobile browser) to avoid issues with veiwing the learning material.

If you are having technical issues with the Online Campus, please email onlinesupport@up.education. To help resolve your issue, please give as much information as possible, including which browser you are using and screenshots that may help us identify the problem.

Yes, a lot! You’ll develop practical skills as you work through the learning content. The programme will have tasks assigned that build on your newly acquired skills so you can apply and extend them.

Each programme will have set learning hours. This information is available in your programme of study's Programme and Assessment Info PDF, which is available for you to download from a forum post in The Hub. Your tutor will post this information in the first week of your programme.

We also display this information in your programme of learning's Course Overview (found at the top of the main menu in your programme of learning).

Your programme material is available in the Online Campus 24/7 so you can work through it during the hours that suit you.

Live Sessions: there are video (via Zoom) Live Sessions that run at set times. These sessions offer a unique opportunity for you to sign in at the same time as your tutor and other students. It allows you to ask questions relating to your learning in real-time and hear other students’ questions and thoughts. Live Sessions are not mandatory to attend because we understand students won’t always be able to attend them due to work etc commitments, so they are recorded and can be re-played when suits.
To view the Live Session recordings for your programme, go to The Hub in your programme of learning, and click Live Session Recordings. Recordings are uploaded here once a Live Session is complete, usually withing 24 hours.

Yes for most of our programmes it’s important that you complete your study in the order it’s been laid out. We carefully designed the sequence of your learning so that it builds with each module, and each part is critical to understanding the next. Submitting your assessments within your programme of study will 'unlock' the next module.

However, for some of our programmes, all modules are open from the start of your programme. Assessments will still have due dates and the Student Progression and Milestones chart in the Course Overview will help you work out your study time.

Yes there are. We like to mirror in-person learning and the professional world as much as possible so that you will have due dates and deadlines.
You will be given due date information for your assessments in your programme of study's Programme and Assessment Info PDF, which is available for you to download from a forum post in The Hub. Your tutor will post this information in the first week of your programme.

Some of our programmes require you to be currently working (or volunteering) in that field of study as an entry requirement and have a set amount of hours that you need to work each week. This will have been carefully conveyed to you when you enrolled with us.

Work placements: some of our programmes require you to complete a work placement for a set amount of time, during a certain time in your programme. Information regarding these work placements will have been conveyed to at enrolment, in the Course Outline and module information of that programme.

Frequently Asked Questions about student support:

No way! You’re part of the Online tribe now! Even though you’re studying online, you’ll join many like-minded students who prefer online learning. We want you to stay connected and never feel isolated. We’ve got messaging, forums, and journal posting to help you interact with other students.

You can always reach out to your tutor for help, or arrange a one-on-one video session. Our team is there to support you and you can message or schedule time to chat with them Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Study might feel demanding around assessment times, especially on top of other demands of family, work, and other commitments. If you are feeling that way, seeing a counsellor is an especially good idea to help you cope with that stress and anxiety.

GO TO: Student Success Hub for more information on how to access FREE counselling services.
GO TO: Section 5.2.4 for the Wellbeing Support Directory.

We know it's frustrating when technology isn’t playing on your team. If you have any technical issues within the Online Campus, please email onlinesupport@up.education. Please include as much information as possible such as what browser you are using, the tool that has the issue, any system messages popping up, what you have already tried to do to fix it, and screenshots of the issue. This information will help the online support team to identify the problem and provide the appropriate support.

Also, there are commercial resources available:

GO TO: Module 6 (Digital Skills Hub) for more information on IT and online learning.

When studying and you are struggling with motivation, time management or simply need help with an assignment or some technical support, you can get in touch with your online tutor, they will support you or help you contact Online Learning Support. They can help you with advice and resources to keep you on track with your learning.

If you want to engage with someone privately, you can use the messaging system in the Online Campus by searching for their name and sending them a message directly.

You can also add posts and feedback to forum threads and journal posts to interact in a public setting.

You can message your tutor privately through the Online Campus messaging system or email them. Check your Programme and Assessment Info PDF (uploaded in a forum post in The Hub, in your programme of learning), for your tutor's name and email address.

You have everything you need for your study in the Online Campus, so you will never be required to visit a campus. Your local campus may have events you will be invited to from time to time — attendance for these events is optional.

Please note: PT programmes have a practical component that may include gym attendance and some programmes have a work placement component.

Yes, online students graduate with the exact same qualification as on-campus students. Not only does your graduation certificate look exactly the same, but your coursework will also cover all the same topics — we just modify the information and assessment tasks so that they are ideally suited to an online learning environment.

Every area of study is different, and so are the software and tool requirements for each. Our Student Recruitment Advisors can provide you with more details if you need them.

We know that life becomes too much and everything happens at the same time. Don’t worry, we're experienced at helping students get to the finish line despite the challenges they may face. You can talk to your tutor about an extension for an assessment submission if necessary, and you have opportunities to chat with the Online team about any academic issues.

Sometimes unexpected things happen in life. You may have obstacles come up, such as your computer suddenly needing to be replaced, your internet going down when you have an assessment submission deadline, a relative or friend passing and you need to take some time to travel for a tangi, or you become ill — what should you do?

Communication is key. Reach out to your tutor as soon as possible and let them know what’s going on. Usually, there is a personalised solution so you can continue to progress towards your learning goals.
