Welcome to the Institute of Allied Health and the HLT43021 Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance course!

This comprehensive program is designed to provide you with the essential skills and knowledge required to work as an allied health assistant. Whether you're entering the healthcare field for the first time or seeking to enhance your existing allied health skills, this course will equip you with the necessary competencies to support allied health professionals in delivering high-quality healthcare services.

About this Course:

This course contains 18 Units of Competency (spread across 18 modules), all of which must be completed in order to achieve the qualification of HLT43021 Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance. You will access each unit sequentially through modules, as you complete the theory-based assessments for each, the next module will open for you.  The total Work Placement hours for this course is 120 hours which also includes the practical skills demonstration in a workplace environment. 

This course is self-paced and designed to be completed asynchronously. The duration may vary based on individual learning preferences and prior experience. You have a maximum of five (5) years from the date of enrolment to complete your course. You can study your course on a full-time, part-time, or self-paced basis. Indicatively, full-time study of the course will take approximately 18 months.

Throughout the program, you'll have the opportunity to develop knowledge and a range of important skills, including communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. Each module will follow standard patterns.

  • Modules - each unit will be displayed as a module and is where you access your learning and assessment

    • Topics - the content will be separated into topics and sub-topics and provides you with the learning required for the unit.

    • Learning Activities - within each topic, you will be presented with learning activities for you to complete. These may include reflection tasks or even a short quiz. These activities are not graded but are important for you to ensure you have understood the content and are ready for assessment.

    • Assessments - At the end of each module  there will be assessments for you to complete.

Work Placement is an important part of this qualification as it provides you with the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge you gain throughout the course in a real workplace environment. Work Placement is a compulsory part of the qualification and in order to achieve this qualification, you must complete a total of 120  hours of work in Australia as detailed in the Assessment Requirements. The work placement involves an average of 12 hours per week in the workplace with some time spent at home completing activities that contribute to assessment. 

Your work placement will be conducted at the end of the qualification and will refer to all units covered in this qualification. For more information regarding work placement, the process, roles responsibilities, and frequently asked questions refer to the Work Placement Guidelines document.

1 CHCMHS001 Work with people with mental health issues 2

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to establish relationships, clarify needs, and then work collaboratively with people who are living with mental health issues.

This unit applies to support workers in contexts outside the mental health sector, but who come into contact with people with mental health issues. The services and support provided are not mental health specific.

2 CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people  2

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work respectfully with people from diverse social and cultural groups and situations, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

This unit applies to all workers.

CHCDIV002 Promote Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Safety 

The unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety issues in the workplace, model cultural safety in own work practice, and develop strategies to enhance cultural safety.

This unit applies to people working in a broad range of roles including those involved in direct client service, program planning, development and evaluation contexts.

3 HLTINF006 Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control 2

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to apply basic infection prevention and control principles in work settings including implementing standard and transmission-based precautions and responding to risks.

This unit applies to individuals working in a range of industry and work setting contexts.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

4 CHCLEG001 Work legally and ethically 1

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify and work within the legal and ethical frameworks that apply to an individual job role.

This unit applies to community services and health workers who play a proactive role in identifying and meeting their legal and ethical responsibilities.

5 BSBMED301 Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately  2

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to understand and respond to instructions; to carry out routine tasks and communicate with a range of internal/external clients in a medical environment; as well as use appropriate medical terminology.

It applies to individuals who apply a broad range of competencies in various medical administration contexts. They may exercise discretion and judgment using appropriate knowledge to provide technical advice and support to a team.

6 CHCCCS020  Respond effectively to behaviours of concern  2

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to respond effectively to behaviours of concern of people. Skills are associated with handling difficult incidents rather than managing ongoing behaviour difficulties.

The unit applies to workers in any context exposed to difficult and challenging behaviour.

7 BSBMED303 Maintain patient records 1

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to maintain patient records within an existing medical records management system, under the supervision of a senior receptionist or practice manager.

It applies to individuals who apply a broad range of competencies in various medical administration contexts. They are skilled operators who are expected to exercise discretion and judgement in accessing and maintaining patient records while fully respecting patient privacy and the confidentiality of their details.

8 HLTWHS002 Follow safe work practices for direct client care 2

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for a worker to participate in safe work practices to ensure their own health and safety, and that of others in work environments that involve caring directly for clients. It has a focus on maintaining safety of the worker, the people being supported and other community members.

This unit applies to all workers who require knowledge of workplace health and safety (WHS) to carry out their own work, in both centre-based and home-based service provision.

9 HLTAHA049 Recognise impact of health conditions 2

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise the impact of health conditions of a person undertaking an intervention or therapy program. Work includes using a basic understanding of the human body to assist in interpreting information about person's health status to promote ways to maintain a healthy functioning of the body.

This unit applies to Allied Health Assistants and should be performed under the direct, indirect or remote supervision and delegation of an Allied Health Professional (AHP).

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Allied Health Assistant Framework, Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

10 CHCCCS038 Facilitate the empowerment of people receiving support 2

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to facilitate the empowerment of people receiving support, and to deliver rights-based services using a person-centred approach. It should be carried out in conjunction with individualised plans.

This unit applies to workers in varied care and support contexts.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

11 CHCCCS036 Support relationships with carer and family 2

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work positively with the carer and family of people using a service based on an understanding of their support needs.

This unit applies to workers across a range of community services contexts. Work may be carried out under direct, indirect or remote supervision.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide assistance to an Allied Health Professional. Work includes following treatment plans for therapeutic interventions or conducting programs.

This unit applies to allied health assistants and should be performed under the direct, indirect or remote supervision and delegation of an Allied Health Professional (AHP).

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Allied Health Assistant Framework, Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

HLTAHA031 Assist in rehabilitation programs

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide assistance to an Allied Health Professional. Work includes receiving and responding to rehabilitation programs developed by Allied Health Professionals.

This unit applies to Allied Health Assistants and should be performed under the direct, indirect or remote supervision and delegation of an Allied Health Professional (AHP).

14 HLTAHA033 Conduct group sessions for individual outcomes 2

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide assistance to an Allied Health Professional. Work includes planning, preparing and implementing group activities to meet individual outcomes.

This unit applies to Allied Health Assistants and should be performed under the direct, indirect or remote supervision and delegation of an Allied Health Professional (AHP).

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Allied Health Assistant Framework, Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

15 HLTAHA044 Work within a community rehabilitation environment 2

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide assistance to an Allied Health Professional. Work includes working with people to support rehabilitation within the community according to a rehabilitation plan.

This unit applies to Allied Health Assistants and should be performed under the direct, indirect or remote supervision and delegation of an Allied Health Professional (AHP).

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Allied Health Assistant Framework, Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

16 HLTAHA029 Support independence and community participation 2

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide assistance to an Allied Health Professional. Work includes working with the person in their home and community to facilitate rehabilitation goals through supporting independence in daily living and optimising community access and participation in the context of a rehabilitation plan.

This unit applies to Allied Health Assistants and should be performed under the direct, indirect or remote supervision and delegation of an Allied Health Professional (AHP).

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Allied Health Assistant Framework, Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

17 HLTAHA047 Engage with clinical supervision and delegation 2

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide assistance to an Allied Health Professional. Work includes preparing for and participating in a structured process of clinical supervision and receiving delegations.

This unit applies to allied health assistants and should be performed under the direct, indirect or remote supervision and delegation of an Allied Health Professional (AHP).

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Allied Health Assistant Framework, Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

18 ** Work Placement  1 You will undertake 120 hours of work placement at an approved workplace and will perform practical demonstrations of skills you have learned in this course.
