You have finished modules one (1) – six (6)!

Congratulations!

Now, it's time for you to begin work placement.

SWLA stands for Structured Workplace Learning & Assessment.

Swinburne Open Education offer students a unique opportunity to study in an online environment to develop their skills and knowledge in their chosen field, at a time and pace that suit them.

The Certificate II in Animal Care requires practical skill application to achieve competency. Structured Workplace Learning and Assessment (SWLA) offers students in these courses the opportunity to seek out a workplace where they can apply their learning in practical ways in order to expand on and demonstrate their skills.

Your work placement is split into two (2). Once you have completed the learning and assessments for modules one(1)–six(6), Module 7 SWLA Block 1, will be unlocked.

You are required to complete a minimum of 104 hours for Certificate II in Animal Care. The minimum number of hours is split across SWLA Block 1 and SWLA Block 2.

You are required to complete a minimum of 54 hours in SWLA Block 1. Your workplace supervisor is required to sign off on all hours completed in both SWLA Block 1 and SWLA Block 2.

There are six (6) assessments listed under SWLA Block 1. Please note that assessment 1 and assessment 2 are not assessments. A description of each assessment is provided below.

Sub Topics

Assessment 1 – Host organisation approval form

The Host organisation approval form is not an assessment. This is a form you must complete and submit to your assessor for approval. You cannot start your work placement until your workplace has been approved.

Assessment 2 – Work placement plan

The work placement plan is not an assessment. Your assessor will complete this document for you. This will be used throughout your work placement by you, your supervisor and your assessor.

Assessment 3 – Portfolio

The portfolio is an assessment that is used to collect practical evidence of your skills and the skills required to complete the Certificate II in Animal Care. The portfolio consists of video demonstrations, photos and short answer questions. These tasks should be completed in the workplace under the supervision of your workplace supervisor.

Assessment 4 – Logbook

The logbook is where you log your completed hours. In the SWLA Block 1, you must record a minimum of 54 hours. These hours must be signed off by your workplace supervisor.
You only need one (1) Logbook. This can be taken to your different workplaces if you require more than one.

Section E: Work placement hours

This is where you record the hours and activities you have completed in the workplace. This is also where your supervisor will sign off the hours completed.

Section F: Consent Form

This section must be completed for each person that is in any photos or videos that you submit with your portfolio.

Assessment 5 – Interview questions

The interview questions are a verbal assessment. This assessment is completed during a phone call with your assessor. Your assessor will ask you the questions listed in the assessment document. You must verbally answer each question. You are provided with these questions and should prepare yourself for this assessment.

Assessment 6 – Third party report

The third-party report must be completed by your workplace supervisor. There is a list of tasks that you must complete in the workplace. Your workplace supervisor is required to sign off each task once you have completed it successfully.

You must complete all SWLA assessments to be deemed competent for the Certificate II in Animal Care.
