Welcome to Module 5, where you will learn about mental health and addiction support roles and organisations that employ mental health and addiction support workers. You will learn about the factors contributing to the need for support services and the range of people you might work with.

This course will provide details about a variety of mental illnesses, including symptoms and treatment options. It will also describe behavioural and substance addiction, including the impacts on tangata and their whānau, and treatment approaches.

You will develop some of the professional skills required, including communication and leadership skills. You will also examine legislation and safety related to your mental health and addiction support roles. The module will also explore professional development and employment opportunities as a mental health and addiction support worker.

You will learn about tools and strategies to support your tangata to develop autonomy, foster hope and support recovery, while building resilience. Tools include the use of personal plans, legislation and health models. Strategies include mentoring and facilitation, working in a multidisciplinary team and community participation.
