Learning through play forms the foundation of Te Whāriki and is becoming a more common approach to learning in junior primary classrooms, with some schools trying out play-based learning at middle and senior primary level.

Looking at the different approaches to early childhood education, play-based learning played a big part in many of those theories.

Activity - Play-based learning

Visit the Ministry of Education's website and read “Learning through play – What’s it all about”.

Reflect on those ideas, and create a resource for yourself with ideas and instructions to use in your own practice. Do some research online and/or talk to your colleagues and peers to find more play-based learning ideas.

For each activity you document, be sure to include:

  • What it is and how it will play out
  • The learning benefits to the child
  • How you will support them to learn
  • Equipment required.
