Term Definition
Active learning A term used to describe activities and strategies used to increase learner engagement.
Asynchronous learning A term used to describe learning that does not take place at the same time or location.
Formative assessment Any knowledge check that occurs at regular intervals throughout the learning and provides opportunities for feedback – usually not formally assessed.
Learning outcomes A learning outcome is a statement of what knowledge and/or skills a learner is expected to acquire at the conclusion of a given unit of study. It should include the attainment level required to achieve the outcome.
Scaffolding strategies A learner-focused method of instruction progressively moves the learner towards greater independence and comprehension.
Subject matter expert (SME) A skilled and experienced person in the topic at hand.
Stakeholder Any party who has an interest in the outcome of the learning.
Storyboarding A process used to lay out content for any learning piece.
Summative assessment A formally assessed set of questions to test how well a learner has absorbed the learning.
Synchronous learning A term used to describe learning that takes place at the same time and location.
Volume of learning (VoL) A term used to describe the amount of time it will take a learner to understand the concepts and develop the skills associated with the course or module.
