allergies

Most people know if they have an allergy to something. Completing a through consultation helps minimise the risk of using something that may affect your client, e.g. latex allergies – use non-latex gloves.

Chemical Allergy

Symptoms

  • Irritation, e.g. itchiness, redness on the skin, rashes, blisters.

Causes

  • Over-exposure, prolonged exposure or repeated contact with allergen causing products.
  • Backfilling a product without sealing first.
  • Using products that are high risk of creating allergies, e.g. formaldehyde, toluene.
  • Not following excellent hygiene, sanitation and sterilisation procedures.
  • Touching implements with your fingers, e.g. using your fingers to reshape your product brush.
  • Touching your clients skin with your brush.

Solutions

  • Leave a small gap between products and the skin/cuticle.
  • Fully complete nail prep before starting any application.
  • Always follow excellent hygiene procedures, e.g. change towels between clients, sterilise and sanitise implements between clients.
  • Work in well ventilated environments.

If an irritation occurs, stop using the product immediately, remove product carefully, watch for further reactions.

Check with the client 24 hours later. If the irritation/reaction gets work, seek medical advice.
