BSBWOR502 – Lead and manage team effectiveness

Unit Purpose

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead teams in the workplace and to actively engage with the management of the organisation. This unit applies to individuals who are working at a managerial level who facilitate work teams  and build a positive culture within their work teams.

Suggested Hours

Although everyone will work at their own pace, we suggest you allow approximately 60 hours to complete this unit competently, including assessment activities.

This unit will be assessed by completing the BSBWOR502 Assessment and an associated practical assessment.

1. Establish team performance plan 1.1.    Consult team members to establish a common understanding of team purpose, roles, responsibilities and accountabilities in accordance with organisational goals, plans and objectives

2. Develop and facilitate team cohesion 2.1     Develop strategies to ensure team members have input into planning, decision making and operational aspects of work team

Evidence of the ability to:

  • use leadership techniques and strategies to facilitate team cohesion and work outcomes including:

encouraging and fostering shared understanding of purpose, roles and responsibilities; identifying and resolving problems; providing feedback to encourage, value and reward others; modelling desired behaviour and practices

  • develop policies and procedures to ensure team members take responsibility for own work and assist others to undertake required roles and responsibilities
  • establish processes to address issues and resolve performance issues
  • support team to meet expected performance outcomes including providing formal and informal learning opportunities as needed
  • develop performance plans with key performance indicators (KPIs), outputs and goals for individuals or the team which incorporate input from stakeholders
  • communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders about team performance plans and team performance
  • facilitate two-way flow of information between team and management relevant to team performance

Introduction

This unit is designed to teach you how to lead and manage team effectiveness. You will learn how to establish the team’s performance plan, develop and facilitate team cohesion, facilitate teamwork, and liaise with stakeholders.

Overview of Sections

Section 1: Establishing team performance plan

This section of the Study Guide will explore how to consult team members to establish a common understanding of the team’s purpose, roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities. It will teach you how to develop team performance plans to establish expected outcomes, outputs, key performance indicators (KPI’s), and goals for the work team. It will also discuss ways to provide support to team members to help them meet expected performance outcomes.

Section 2: Developing and facilitating team cohesion

This section of the Study Guide will explore how to develop strategies to ensure team members have input into planning and decision making in the workplace. You will also learn how to facilitate team members to take responsibility for their work, how to provide effective feedback to team members, and the importance of encouraging, valuing and rewarding individual and team efforts. Finally, you will learn about the steps managers can take to ensure any issues, concerns or problems identified by team members are recognised and addressed.

Section 3: Facilitating teamwork

This section of the Study Guide explores the importance of facilitating effective teamwork. It will outline methods of encouraging team member participation and how to develop team norms to ensure team members participate in, and take responsibility for, team activities. You will also learn how to manage team performance through collaborating with the team to develop a team performance improvement plan and ensuring that your own performance provides a role model of behaviour for team members.

Section 4: Liaising with stakeholders

This section of the Study Guide outlines how to maintain open communication with stakeholders using a stakeholder communications plan. You will learn to facilitate two-way communication (from management to employees and from employees back to management) and how to successfully manage problems and concerns raised by all stakeholders in order to take corrective action.
