CHCCCS009 – Facilitate responsible behaviour

Unit Purpose

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to monitor individuals, respond to behaviours of concern, deal with conflict and support responsibility for behaviour management and change.

Suggested Hours

Although everyone will work at their own pace, we suggest you allow approximately 60 hours to complete this unit competently, including seminars, tutorials, assignments and practical activities.

1.2.    Recognise situations for potential conflict and identify appropriate preventative and defusing strategies that can be employed
1.3.    Evaluate the person’s behaviour and interactions in a fair, objective and consistent manner
1.4.    Ensure decisions on action are consistent with available evidence and organisation policies

2. Manage conflict 2.1.    Conduct interactions with individuals in a fair, just, humane, equitable and positive manner
2.2.    Use communication strategies with individuals for effective interaction and problem solving
2.3.    Consider cultural sensitivities and adapt style and language to accommodate different cultural values and practices
2.4.    Identify potential causes of conflict and use a range of appropriate and effective defusing responses
2.5.    Use negotiation techniques to divert and minimise aggressive behaviour
2.6.    Use negotiation to examine cause and effect and encourage appropriate responsibility and accountability for behaviour and its outcomes

3.2.    Confirm using clear, calm and objective language the implications of continuing behaviours of concern
3.3.    Follow procedures to ensure personal safety of self, the individual, colleagues and others
3.4.    Select strategies and response for their potential to provide role models for confident and assertive behaviour
3.5.    Carry out interventions based on an analysis of the situation and organisation policies and procedures
4. Complete reporting requirements 4.1.    Report incidents in a manner that complies with policy, procedure, and legislation
4.2.    Prepare reports and documentation according to organisation requirements
4.3.    Maintain currency of documentation by making appropriate updates

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively do the task outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage the task and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

  • Legal and ethical considerations related to addressing behaviours of concern and how these are applied in an organisation and individual practice, including:
    • duty of care
    • individual rights and equality
    • constraint
    • imprisonment
    • abuse
  • types of behaviours of concern, underlying reasons and appropriate ways to respond
  • cultural practices and customs of the service users’ population and their impact on behaviour in the particular environment
  • principles of effective communication for conflict management
  • principles of responding to human behaviour relating to violence, aggression and suicide
  • reporting procedures for incidents and accidents
  • specific statutory requirements related to treatment of people with special needs and requiring special support
  • specialist services and referral options
  • critical incident procedures

Performance Evidence

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

  • recognised and responded to at least 3 different situations where behaviours of concern are present
  • communicated effectively in at least 1 situation of conflict by:
    • engaging positively and supportively
    • using negotiation and problem solving skills
    • modelling assertive behaviour

This unit is designed to introduce you to the skills used to facilitate responsible behaviour. You will learn about observing client behaviour to minimise conflict and behaviours of concern. You will also learn about the negotiation process and the various techniques used to manage conflict and behaviours of concerns, as well as how to report such incidents.

Overview of Sections

Section 1: Observing Individuals

This section of the Study Guide will provide you with an overview on how you to observe client behaviour and recognise signs for potential conflict. It also covers how to ensure that your observations are objective and bias free and how to make necessary referrals.

Section 2: Managing Conflict

In this section, you will learn about conflict management. Specially, you will learn about how to communicate effectively and be aware of cultural sensitivities. You will also learn how to identify potential causes of conflict and use negotiation techniques to defuse conflict.

Section 3: Responding to Behaviours of Concern

In this section of the Study Guide, you learn how to respond to behaviours of concern, including aggression, violence, and suicide. You will lean the various principles and technique needed to respond to these behaviours of concerns.

Section 4: Completing Reporting Requirements

In this section of the Study Guide, you will learn about reporting incidents according to legislation and organisations policies and procedures.
